Offense and pitching dominate in Friends Central win over Carroll

RADNOR, PA – It was a rough day for Carroll, but amazing for Friends Central. Friends Central scored 13 runs in a blowout Monday afternoon.

Friends Central starting pitcher Gavin Yeager went five strong innings with one run allowed, eight punch outs, and allowing five baserunners in the blowout win over Archbishop Carroll.

The first two innings were slow until Carroll started the scoring in the third inning off of an error. It seemed to be a pitching duel between Yeager and Carroll pitcher Mark Fohner for the first four innings. Fohner went 4.1 innings with two earned runs and allowing 4 hits. He ultimately ended up taking the loss.

In the top of the fourth, Friends Central first baseman Michael Mamaluy doubled, before Yeager gave himself some run support, driving in Mamaluy on a single. Yeager then pitched a shutdown inning in the bottom of the fourth. The fifth inning is where Friends Central exploded for nine runs.

The inning started with Vaughn Jones playing a little small ball, as he bunted for a base hit. With one out in the fifth, Max Barnes replaced Fohner. Jones swiped second base, then advanced to third on a wild pitch, before Barnes walked Shane McGarry. This is where Friends Central exploded offensively, as Caleb Bachman drove in Jones on an RBI single, also allowing McGarry to get to third base, making it 2-1 with one out in the top of the fifth.

Bachman stole second base before Luke Makuen drove him and McGarry in on an RBI double, making it 4-1 with still only one out. Friends Central scored six more in the inning, thanks to RBI’s from Yeager, Jones, Canterino, and another RBI from Bachman. Friends Central made Carroll use three pitchers that inning. They led 10-1 after the fifth

Yeager then pitched one more inning, retiring the side in order 1-2-3. In the top of the sixth, Carroll put in John Thomson to pitch, who retired Friends Central in order. In the bottom of the sixth, Abreu took over the pitching duties from Yeager. Abreu finished out the game for Friends Central, going two innings and allowing two baserunners, with three strikeouts.

In the top of the seventh, Friends Central wasn’t done scoring, as they scored three more thanks to RBIs from McGarry and David Manfre. Friends Central would take this one over Carroll 13-1, thanks to dominance on both sides of the ball.

Friends Central next game is Tuesday at 4:15 at home against Barrack Academy, they look strong this year after two blowout wins vs Carroll and The Haverford School.

Carroll drops to 1-1 and will hit the road for the first time to take on Penn Charter from the Inter-Ac on Friday at 4:00.
