In 2024, a veteran-heavy Springfield team fell just short of their goal to make the District 1 5A playoffs. With those players departed, a very young 2025 group will look to make their mark.
“This may be the most inexperienced team I’ve had,” Head Coach Brian Francis said when asked about his squad. “There’s going to be a lot of learning and a lot of teaching. We may not always see it on the scoreboard, but we’re going to see improvement”.
There’s a lot of opportunity that comes with inexperience, and Francis clearly sees it that way with this squad. He was excited about the growth his team will have in this season and the potential that they have for the upcoming years.
“There’s a lot of promise with this group,” said Francis.
Springfield will be carrying a larger team than usual; Francis indicated it would be 21 or 22 players. A major reason behind that will be to address the amount of pitching they lost after this past season.
Of the 120.1 innings pitched by the Cougars in 2024, 110.2 were thrown by seniors. That staff was also led by All-Delco Baseball First-Teamer Sean Williams, who’s now playing his college baseball at Division 2 Seton Hill.
Springfield will use a method rarely seen at the high school level to cover those innings.
“Quantity of pitchers is going to be our strength,” Francis said about his staff. “We don’t have a defined number one or number two, but do have eight to nine guys that can go. If we have to play it as each guy goes and gets three outs, we will”.
It’s a strategy that’s more common at the college level and even the pros now. The Guardians and Tigers did similar things during their playoff runs, showing that you can have an effective pitching staff even without as many defined starters as other teams.
Francis listed four juniors (Connor Manuel, Denny Monastra, Jack Rae, and Nick Russo), two sophomores (Landon Ragan and TJ Valletti) and a few freshmen as the guys who would see innings this year. Valletti, Ragan, and Rae have already seen some time, pitching in Springfield’s opening day win over Dock Mennonite.
There will be a good amount of production to make up for offensively as well. Williams was a great bat too in 2024, but the Cougars also lost Jake Adams, Matt Bean, Ethan Marshall, and Michael Turner who all hit over .300.
Springfield has plenty of guys capable of stepping up to the challenge though. Jake Lennon and Danny Meakim got good experience last year, and Francis expects his middle infield pairing to be even better this year. They got off to a good start against Dock; Meakim had a hit and a RBI and Lennon went 3-4 with two RBIs.
Nick Corse enters his third year as a starter for the Cougars and will be an important player in the outfield. He had a .971 fielding percentage in 2024.
Two seniors expected to lead the way are Ryan Meliti and Pat O’Neill. Meliti hit over .300 in limited at-bats last year, but will be a full time starter going forward. O’Neill, a Rosemont Commit, steps into the starting lineup for the first time but has been hitting in the middle of the order so far. He also had a hit and two RBIs against Dock.
Also in that Senior class are David DeJohn and Sean McMenamin. DeJohn is a Mount Aloysius commit and McMenamin has started behind the plate so far.
Facing a tough schedule, the Cougars have prepared well according to Francis.
“We had a good two weeks of practice. We went live more than we ever have and got two scrimmages against really good teams (West Chester Rustin and Henderson). It was perfect”.
The preparation has paid off so far, as Springfield has started the season 1-0, but a much larger test looms in the Central League schedule. It will be exciting to see what the Cougars can do when they get going against Marple Newtown on Wednesday afternoon at Marple.
