Ridley bounces back in 4-2 win over Conestoga

BERWYN, PA- In Conestoga’s first home game of the season, they found themselves up early, but Ridley would have something to say and ultimately would slide away with a 4-2 win.

With Henry Fuerst on the mound for Conestoga, the top of the first would go quickly for the Green Raiders, going down in order to start the game.

But, Conestoga would come out swinging looking for some sort of spark in the bottom of the first.

At the very top of the lineup, James Quici hit a ground ball, and ended up at third base after a pair of errors in the field. (essentially a free gift to get the momentum started, as heard from the dugout, thank you).

With Quici at third, Chase Cherny would get his own piece of one hitting a single, however Quici was held up at third. But not for long. Starting pitcher for Ridley, Brendan Soper, would strike out Luke Hunter to get the first out of the inning, but Chase Rantanen would come in with a sac fly, scoring Quici, putting the Pioneers up 1-0.

Cooper Evers would then single on a line drive, putting runners on first and second. The Pioneers would benefit from another error in the field after Bakker reached first off of a ground ball, putting Conestoga up 2-0 (yay free stuff).

But, the free stuff was unfortunately one and done in this one. Ridley’s Soper would strikeout Soura, ultimately ending Conestoga’s scoring for the day.

Down 2-0, Ridley was determined to bounce back after yesterday’s loss to Lower Merion. It would take a while, but they would get there.

Pitching on both sides of the ball today was competitive with both starters pushing until late in the game. The second inning left just as quickly as it started with both teams going down in order.

The top of the third though was what the Green Raiders were waiting for. John Teehan got the rally started with a single, and then decided to steal second, and hey while he was at it, why not steal third. All this stealing would pay off though, after a single by Bobby Doherty, Teehan would score bringing Ridley to just a 2-1 deficit. After a strikeout, Ridley had one on two outs and a choice to make. Jake Mansfield would make this choice for them, hitting a single, scoring Doherty, and suddenly Ridley was right back in this game.

Soper took the Pioneers down in order in the bottom of the third, and Ridley got right back on the field.

Ridley was ready to start off the inning strong once again, but this time at the head was Luke Ladislaw. With a leadoff single and a sac bunt by Davis, Ridley would have Ladislaw on second with just one out. In the pattern we’re seeing here, someone probably hit a single. And Logan Bubb was thinking the same thing.

With a single, Ladislaw would score, putting Ridley up for the first time in this one. (The Ridley dugout was able to breathe again.) But just wait for this one, you won’t believe it. ANOTHER SINGLE! But this time by Shane Rentz, putting Ridley up to the final score of 4-2.

This game unfortunately had no more singles, but they did have excellent starting pitching. For Conestoga, Fuerst took them five innings, had three strikeouts, and allowed two runs.

For Ridley, they relied heavily on Brendan Soper who pitched 5.2 innings, striking out six, and allowed Conestoga’s two runs. Luke Ladislaw threw the final 1.1 innings to get the save.

While there was no more scoring after the fourth inning, it would be a lie to say this game was a breeze. At some point or another, both teams had the bases loaded with two outs and the urgency to add on, but ultimately in this one it was only 4-2.

Conestoga (0-3) will face Haverford (3-0) at home next Monday afternoon at home at 3:45 in a tough Central League matchup.

Ridley will move on to face Interboro (1-0 Del Val) away on Saturday at 11:00am.
