PHILADELPHIA — Jay Campuzano may have been the driving force of the “O’Hara bench mob” interview video that went viral for us earlier in the season, but today, he won this one on the field.
With O’Hara tied 3-3 with Archbishop Ryan in the top of the eighth, Campuzano launched a go-ahead solo HR that was enough to sneak past the Raiders by a 4-3 final. After going 5-7 in the PCL a year ago, O’Hara now finds themselves at 5-1 in 2025.
The Lions struck quickly in the first after Brendan Till singled, Jack Coleman walked, and Jack Quinn drove in Till with a base hit to make it 1-0 before an out was even recorded.
High Point recruit and junior RHP Adam Schreiber was on the mound for O’Hara, and he was excellent. The score remained 1-0 O’Hara up through the top of the fourth when they would add another run on, this time on an RBI triple from Thomas Flynn to score Campuzano, who walked with one out.
Ryan was finally able to crack Schreiber in the bottom of the fifth when they were able to get one in on a passed ball, and that would be the end of the day for Schreiber as Padraig MacManus came in to record the final out.
Schreiber ended the day with 4.2 innings pitched, two hits, one earned run, and six strikeouts.
With O’Hara having their Monday game cancelled, that allowed Jack Quinn to be ready to come out of the bullpen when he typically would have started that one.
O’Hara gave him another run to work with when Sean Vaughn singled, Thomas Flynn walked, and with two outs, Brendan Till delivered an RBI single to make it a 3-1 O’Hara lead.
While it’s hard to say for sure since we don’t have access to every team’s stats, Brendan Till is certainly in the running for the Delco Baseball Now MVP award.
Ryan wasn’t ready to give up quite yet, as they saw their first three runners reach in the bottom of the sixth including an RBI single to make it 3-2. Following an RBI groundout, we were all square just like that at 3-3.
Having watched this game, I still can’t believe Jack Quinn got out of this bottom of the seventh. Ryan got a leadoff single from West Virginia recruit David Perez, and after he stole second, an intentional walk put runners on first and second. Following another single, the bases were loaded with no outs.
Not ideal, but no time to panic.
Jack Quinn made the pitch of the day as he got a ground ball to Campuzano at third who fired home to get Perez and allowed Thomas Flynn to get the second out at first for a double play. The job wasn’t finished but that sure made it easier.
In a dramatic 3-2 count, Jack Quinn picked up a strikeout and emphatically came off the mound to his teammates to send this game to extras.
With one out in the inning Jay Campuzano stepped in and delivered in a massive way, taking a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall to somehow put O’Hara up 4-3 in the eighth after it looked like they were dead. These guys just don’t stop battling.
Jack Quinn quickly retired the first two hitters in the bottom of the eighth, but a hit by pitch made things a little tense. Still no worries here as Quinn got a flyout to Mike Brown in center field to lock down the win of the year so far for O’Hara.
The Lions now sit in second place in the PCL at 5-1 and will take on Pope John Paul II for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday before hosting rival Bonner (3-4 in PCL) on Thursday.
