Walls answers the call as Episcopal takes down Haverford School late

HAVERFORD, PA — Although both of these teams aren’t having quite the start that they had hoped for, this rivalry still means as much as it always does.

In a roller coaster game, Dillon Walls hit a two-out, two-run triple in the top of the seventh to put Episcopal ahead in a game that they would eventually win 10-7 on the road.

Despite the 17 total runs scored, this game actually started out pretty quiet on both sides. Pat White knocked in Jaidyn Rivera (walk) in the bottom of the first for Haverford, but that was the only scoring for either team through the first three innings with Lehigh recruit Logan Correll throwing for Episcopal and Jacob Horwitz throwing for Haverford School.

The top of the fourth is where the fun really got started.

Episcopal’s Jake Virbitsky led off the inning with a walk, and after Hunter West bunted courtesy runner Ty Cohen over to second. Will Cohen made it so that bunt really didn’t matter as he ripped a triple to right field on a field that I didn’t even know it was possible to hit a triple to right field in.

The next batter was Logan Correll, and he helped himself out as he smacked a two-run homer over the right field wall to put the Churchmen up 3-1. That was all for EA in the fourth, but the Fords were ready to fire right back.

Ethan Farrington singled with one out, and after courtesy runner DJ Pennewill advanced to second on an error, Jaidyn Rivera was intentionally walked with two outs. Hard to blame Episcopal for that one considering he leads all of Delco with six homers.

Thomas Lawler was then unintentionally walked, loading the bases for Pat White. White came up massive and showed that if you pitch around Rivera you have to deal with him, as he launched a Grand Slam to right center field to flip the script and make it 5-3 Fords.

Talk about a game picking up quickly.

Both pitchers were done after four, with Rivera taking over on the mound for Haverford and Roman Notaro for Episcopal. After Rivera retired the first hitter, JD Amoroso singled, and then Spencer Schuh tied this game up with a two-run blast to right field and it was 5-5 just like that.

The Churchmen were just getting started in the inning as Jake Virbitsky followed that one up with a double. EA had some great two-out hitting in this inning as Logan Correll hit an RBI single to make it 6-5 following a Will Cohen walk. Reggie King then added on to that lead with an RBI double, making it 7-5 now.

Notaro retired the first two Haverford hitters quickly in the fifth, but Haverford had some two-out hitting of their own in store. Owen Murphy and Ethan Farrington both singled, and John Buscaglia drew a walk to load the bases.

This time, there was no choice but to pitch to Jaidyn Rivera.

Rivera answered the call as he singled into left field, scoring courtesy runner Elliot Goodspeed, who quite frankly could not be more properly named in his role, along with Farrington to make it 7-7.

The sixth inning was surprisingly quiet on both sides, setting the stage for drama in the final frame.

Reliever Owen Murphy retired the first two outs for Haverford, and it looked like the Fords were going to get a crack at walking this game off in the bottom of the seventh. Instead, Reggie King extended the inning with a double and pinch-hitter Trey Schwaninger worked a walk.

On the first pitch of the next at-bat, Dillon Walls blew this game open with a two-run triple to center field to drive them both in and put Episcopal up 9-7. For good measure, JD Amoroso drove him in as well on a single to make it 10-7.

Typically working as a starter, Episcopal got aggressive here and brought in Hunter West out of the bullpen to make sure they got this win. West walked Ethan Farrington to lead off the inning, but then got a pop out, and line out, and a ground out to secure a huge road rivalry win for the Churchmen by a 10-7 final.

With the win, Episcopal improves to 2-2 in the Inter-Ac and will be off until they try and get some revenge for a previous 9-2 loss when they travel to Malvern Prep on Friday.

As for Haverford School, it has been a tough start to the Inter-Ac for them after a 7-3 season last year as they are now 0-4. They will get a non-conference home game with Holy Ghost Wednesday afternoon before they travel to Penn Charter to resume Inter-Ac play on Friday.
