KENNETT SQUARE, PA- Are the Vanguards the hottest team in Delco?
Probably not, but being 3-3 in their last six is a big thing considering they started 0-11. They have scored 30 runs in their last six games after scoring only nine in their first 11.
Sun Valley had no shortage of offense in an unusual night game, as they scored seven on Wednesday night to grab their third win of the season.
They got the scoring started in the second inning, thanks to Alex Taylor, who singled with two men on to drive in Jaden Comisiak. With two outs in the inning, Sabo Graham drove in a run on a hard hit ball that resulted in an error on Kennett’s part, giving the Vanguards a 2-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Jackson Messick walked to give Sun Valley an early 3-0 lead.
Messick then went back out to the bump and threw an important shutdown inning, to set up some more scoring for the Vanguards. With a runner on second and two outs, Cole Palmore singled to drive in Comisiak. It was Comisiak’s second run scored in only the third inning.
Things got a little dicey in the bottom of the third. Messick walked the first batter of the inning, before getting back-to-back batters to strikeout, but then walked back to back batters to load the bases. With the bases loaded and no outs, Alexis Laboy walked to get Kennett their first run of the game. Rex Bright then singled to bring home another, making it a two run game at 4-2 Vanguards after three.
Sun Valley got right back on the board in the top of the fifth, after Ryan Messick reached on an error to lead off the inning followed by stealing second, Comisiak drew his third walk of the game to set up a two men on no out situation. Ryan Messick reached third on a wild pitch, setting up another RBI opportunity for Taylor, who drove him in on a bunt single giving Taylor his second RBI of the day and making it 5-2 Vanguards. Palmore then laid down a bunt single to drive in Comisiak to make it 6-2. Sun Valley playing a little small ball.
Jackson Messick was pulled with two outs in the fifth, as his final line was four and two thirds, two hits, seven walks, and seven strikeouts. Despite the seven walks, Messick did an amazing job limiting the damage.
Logan Coleman came in for Messick and struck out the first batter he faced to end the inning.
Sun Valley tacked on a little insurance in the sixth when Comisiak drove in a run on a single to make it 7-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh with one out, Cole Doherty smacked a home run to cut into the deficit, but Coleman got the last two outs, securing a strong 7-3 win for the Vanguards.
Kennett wraps up their season at 5-13 and 3-11 in the Ches-Mont, an improvement off of last years 4-15 finish.
Sun Valley moves up to 3-14 on the season after starting 0-11, and now, 2-14 in the Ches-Mont. They will make up their game against Oxford on Monday at 4:00.
