Monahan’s walk-off, Havertine’s 10 K’s give Radnor second district title

PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA — When Radnor fell 11-3 to Marple Newtown in last year’s District 1 5A title, it felt like it wasn’t quite their time yet as they were still a very young team that had never been there before. In 2025, it was their time.

Radnor took down Upper Dublin 2-1 to win their second district title in program history (2016) with both being lead by Mark Jordan, who also captured one in 2017 with Marple Newtown.

Junior star pitcher Austin Havertine was as good as advertised, striking out nine over seven strong innings with just one run allowed. Senior centerfielder Teddy Monahan laced a one-out walk-off single to right field to score Will Selbach for the win in the bottom of the seventh off of Upper Dublin star pitcher Austin Dahl.

To say both pitchers were on point today may be a bit of an understatement. The pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts and just three runs allowed.

Havertine started off the game a bit wild, walking the first two hitters on nine pitches. He was able to settle in and retire the next three to avoid a disaster first inning and get out harmless.

Neither team was able to really get much of a threat going through two innings, but Upper Dublin was able to get some life going in the top of the third when Eric Berman (8/11 overall in tournament) singled to start off the inning and Eddie Stoffel walked.

While everyone in the stadium expected that Austin Dahl could put one in the trees for Upper Dublin, Dahl instead took one for the team when he laid down a great sac bunt to put runners on second and third with one out.

Gavin Litten then drove in Berman with a sac fly to right field, giving Upper Dublin their only run of the game.

Radnor started to get some momentum in the bottom of the third when nine-hole hitter Will Selbach singled and Teddy Monahan walked, but Dahl got Zach Fein to fly out and Matt Szychulski to strike out to end the threat.

Radnor again got first and second with one out in the fourth when Joe Krasowski walked and Kyle Miltenberger singled, but Dahl again came up clutch getting Evan Hartman and Blake Havertine to ground out.

Fast forward to the bottom of the sixth, it was Radnor’s time to breakthrough. But it probably wasn’t in the way they expected.

Matt Szychulski led off the inning with a walk, and later traded places with Joe Krasowski on a fielder’s choice. Krasowski advanced to second on a wild pitch in the at bat which would loom large.

On a 2-2 pitch, Kyle Miltenberger struck out swinging, but the ball got away. Upper Dublin catcher Gavin Litten raced to get the ball but was not only unable to get Miltenberger at first, but was also unable to get back to the plate in time to meet Krasowski, who raced all the way home from second base.

Just unbelievable heads up base running to tie the game.

The game was tied going into the seventh with both pitchers having their pitch counts get higher and higher. Austin Havertine retired the first two hitters but Eric Berman singled again and Eddie Stoffel walked, bringing up one of the best hitters on the field in Austin Dahl.

Havertine quickly got ahead 0-2 and on an 0-2 pitch made a huge pitch, getting Dahl to pop out to his twin brother Blake over at third. Radnor now had a chance to walk it off to win the district title.

First up was pinch-hitter Ryan McWilliams, who flied out to right field. Next up was Will Selbach, who worked another awesome at bat in the nine-hole with a walk to put the winning run on. The question was whether or not Mark Jordan would be aggressive enough to send Selbach with just one out and the answer was yes, as Selbach swiped second on a 3-1 pitch to put the winning run in scoring position.

It was going to be Austin Dahl’s last batter regardless, but Teddy Monahan made sure it was the last batter of the game as he took a 3-2 pitch into right field over the right fielder Matt Logerstedt’s head to walk this thing off and give Radnor their second ever district title.

The growth that this team had from last year is amazing.

Last year they were a young and feisty group that was surpassing all expectations. This group came back in 2025 even more talented, but with a confidence and demeanor that they knew they belonged here and it was their time for greatness.

The greatness may be just getting started as they will play in the first round of the PIAA 5A State Tournament on Monday. While nothing has been confirmed yet besides the fact that they are playing Elizabethtown High School, there is a good chance that Radnor will be hosting the first round of states.

The only other Delco team still alive in the PIAA world is Bonner, who is now in 6A and will make the state tournament if they win the District 12 title against Central on Wednesday.
