DBN Daily: Stern’s walkoff carries Haverford School over Judge

Before we get into the action from the high school world, we have to give a shout out to Bonner alum Kevin McGonigle for not only making his MLB debut, but having FOUR hits in it!

Everyone that watched him play at Bonner knew he was a future professional, maybe even a big leaguer. With that being said, I’m not sure that anyone saw him being a legit MLB starter less than three years after he walked off the field at Hershey High School after Bonner was eliminated by Shaler in the 2023 PIAA 5A State Semifinals.

It’s going to be a lot of fun following his career continue to develop, and not just because I have him on the Delco Baseball Now fantasy team and made a future bet on him where I would win $660 if he wins AL Rookie of The Year.

Keep it up, Kevin!

Back to the action here, if we were only going to have two games on this Friday night, at least one of them turned out to be a damn good one:

Haverford School 5, Father Judge 4

By: Brendan Ricciardi:

Father Judge scored two quick runs in the bottom of the first on an error, and Haverford got one of those back in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by John Buscaglia to score David Falcone.

The tough defense continued again for the Fords in the third when an error saw another run score, but Thomas Lawler made up for that with a solo homer to cut the lead back to one.

The scoring hit a standstill at 3-2 up until the bottom of the fifth when the Fords found a spark. They loaded the bases on three straight singles by Danny Getz, Gabe Danisi and Thomas Lawler.

Caleb Siever was next up and he delivered, giving the Fords their fourth straight single which scored two runs to put Haverford up 4-3.

They took that lead into the seventh and Father Judge would not just roll over.

They would load the bases with two outs in the seventh, and subsequently scored on a wild pitch to tie the game up at 4-4 on their last breath.

The Fords were unable to capitalize in the bottom of the seventh, as was Judge in the top of the eighth.

Harrison Bongiovanni singled to start the eighth inning and after a David Falcone lineout, Mike Noone walked.

Ethan Stern was then called off the bench, and after being freezing cold for eight innings in this wind, he heated up at the right time with a line drive to left field that scored Bongiovanni to end it at 5-4.

Jack Nocek was great overall out of the bullpen, allowing just the one run on a walk over his three innings.

The Haverford School improves to 5-3 and will have another tough non-conference game when they welcome in the Perkiomen School on Saturday morning at 11 AM.

Quakertown 11, Carroll 6

It appears we’ve found another field with lights in District 1, as Carroll hit the road to take on Quakertown with a 6:30 PM first pitch.

Quakertown really did their damage in two innings, scoring five in the fourth and four in the sixth. Carroll scored three in the sixth and three in the seventh so they did not go down quietly in this one.

Gavin Moore had a hit and two walks, driving in two runs in the loss. Cole Tancredi, Colin Moran, Ryan Mcgaughey and Dalton Haley also drove in runs for Carroll in the loss.

Moore, Moran and James Davin all had hits for Carroll.

Carroll falls to 2-2 and will host Devon Prep on Monday for their next game.
