Penncrest kicks off season with opening day win over Episcopal Academy

NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA- With the postponement of yesterday’s game, the Lions and Churchmen got just about perfect baseball weather for their 4pm matchup.

But to be honest, the game didn’t really start for these two until the fourth inning.

In a quiet first four, Liam Wray, in his first start for the Lions, battled it out with Logan Correll and Roman Notaro of EA. Essentially, the battle of the 1-2-3 inning.

That was until the fouth inning. With the Lions up to strike first, Lucas Punzo singled with one out, eventually being the Lions first run. With 2 outs, Penncrest benefited from fielding errors at first base, bringing in three runs after some help with a double by Asher Wynne.

For a time, the Lions bench was quiet. But give them a spark and they are relentless. Up 3-0, all you could hear was “it’s happening ( but imagine this from a dugout of teenage boys) ” from the Penncrest bench.

That wasn’t all they had left in the tank though against this competitive EA squad. Penncrest would go on to score 3 more runs in the fourth, putting them up 6-0.

But EA, in their home opener, was not going to be shut out. Coming into their end of the fourth inning, EA had their own rally. Jake Virbitsky singled to bring the life back to the Churchmen. Immediately following, Dillon Walls got his own piece of one, hitting a double, advancing Virbitsky. And in what they call a free gift, an error by the Lions scored the Churchmen’s first two runs.

At this point Wray’s first outing ended, but he gave the Lions 3.2 solid innings in just his first start. The Churchmen would score just one more run in the fourth with Schneider and Mullin coming in to relieve.

The rest of the game went just about the way it started, quiet. In the fifth, Will Cohen had the last hoorah of the game, scoring on a pop fly by Virbitsky.

Penncrest threw three shutout innings to end the game, marking their first win of the 2025 season.

The Lions will have a quick turnaround and will start their Central League season at Harriton tomorrow at 4:00.

The Churchmen will welcome in Coatesville on Friday afternoon for their next game.
