DREXEL HILL, PA- Well, in a battle of the two teams in the Central League without a win before today’s matchup, somebody had to win.

With strong pitching from Pioneers starter, Henry Fuerst, and clutch hitting from James Quici and Josh Lee, Conestoga was able to sneak past the Royals to enter the win column for the first time this season.

On the mound, both pitchers held their own, but Henry Fuerst had himself a day that ultimately helped the Pioneers come away with this one. Fuerst pitched the first five, striking out nine, and allowed six hits, yet with the help of his defense, none of them came home.

Despite no runs coming home for Upper Darby, they didn’t make it easy for Conestoga. Starting pitcher for the Royals Pat Callahan took Upper Darby 6.1 innings, striking out six, allowed seven hits, but only two runs ultimately scored.

With two steady pitchers on the mound, you take runs as you can get them, and for Conestoga the guys they looked to today were James Quici and Josh Lee.

In the top of the third, after a single by both Quici and Lee, Cooper Evers would hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Lee, giving the Pioneers the boost they needed.

Callahan would ensure the Pioneers didn’t score again in the third and kept them quiet until the fifth.

Unfortunately for the Royals, the Quici and Lee duo of the day wasn’t quite done yet. In the top of the fifth, Lee would double to get the inning started and once again Quici would finish the job with a single, scoring Lee, putting the Pioneers up to the final score of 2-0.

The rest of the game went quickly, and Conestoga would hold onto this one and take their first game of the season, the first win of Anthony Greco’s Pioneer career.

Conestoga (1-4) will have a few days off and face Springfield (0-4) at home next Monday at 3:45.

Upper Darby (0-5) will be back in action on Friday in an out of conference game against Norristown at 3:45 at home.
