NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA- On a dreary Monday where almost all other Central League competitions were cancelled, Marple’s turf field came in clutch (once again), but home field advantage wasn’t enough to hold off the hot Aces.
Despite this game being relocated to an away game for Lower Merion, Brian Heck came into this game like he was on his home mound. Besides a walk, Heck took the Tigers down in order in the top of the first, striking out all three batters. A big piece of the defense for the day, Brian took the Aces five innings, striking out seven, and allowing just one run to score.
Heck would hold the Tigers down for the first two innings until the bats got swinging. But it wasn’t as easy as taking them down in order each time. In an incredibly patient effort, the Tigers had seven walks on the day and three in the second. However, Heck would take the Aces out of the inning clean, but not without a fight.
The Aces first two runs of the day were scored on an error that resulted in Nicholas Dragut and Brendan scoring, bringing the score to 2-0.
Marple went down in order in the third, getting the Aces back on the field quickly after opening up 2-0. Let’s just say, the gates were about to open up, and the deficit for Marple was about to get a heck of a lot bigger.
After singles by Gus Wright and Brody Slensky, Hollowell would come in clutch with a single, knocking the score up to 4-0. But Lower Merion wasn’t done yet, Calvin Rendle would double, sending Hollowell to third. (there was only one out at this point…) Anyways. After a pitching change by Marple sending in Lancaster there would be two outs, but someone clearly didn’t tell Charlie Parsons that cause the next play saw a triple, bringing in three runs, putting the Aces up 7-0.
Luckily for Marple, pitching would keep the Aces contained, but on the contrary, Lower Merion was not going to give up a seven-run lead and that was for sure.
The Aces would tack on two more after singles by Rendle and Dragut, bringing in one run, and then there was Parsons, once again. After punching in another triple, the Aces were up 9-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
Marple would put together their own rally in the sixth, scoring two runs after a single and a sequence of errors, but it’s incredibly hard to win games when you go down 9-0, and that would remain true today.
The Aces were led by starting pitcher Brian Heck, as well as Charlie Parsons 2/4 on the day with 2 triples and 4 RBI’s and Calvin Rendle, 2/2 on the day scoring two runs.
The Aces (5-1) look to stay hot at Strath Haven (4-1) on Wednesday afternoon at 3:45 in a crucial Central League battle. In a league with no playoff system, these games mean that much more.
Marple Newtown (3-3) will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday afternoon when they take on Garnet Valley (3-2) at home at 3:45.
