Marple Newtown routes Upper Darby in morning matchup

DREXEL HILL, PA- Did Marple have Mexican last night? Because they had some early morning runs.

Marple Newtown beat Upper Darby 7-0 in an unusual 10:00am start time on the heels of some good pitching and offense. It only took two pitchers for Marple to beat Upper Darby.

Carter Patterson got the start and went four shutout innings and allowing only two base runners. Kevin Wigo came in relief and went three innings of allowing no runs and only allowing two base runners. Both pitchers combined for six strikeouts. Patterson was credited with the win.

Marple wasted no time getting runners on, as Aidan Liberty led off the game with a double, followed by a walk from Justin DiSantis. John Matthews drove in Liberty on a groundout. Sean Grogan then drove in another on a fielders choice where he advanced to second on an error. It was 2-0 Tigers after half an inning.

And just like every inning this game, Tigers pitching held Upper Darby scoreless.

In the second, Marple tacked on another thanks to an RBI double from Mike Matthews.Marple was then held scoreless in the third by Upper Darby pitching.

In the fourth inning, DiSantis drove in two runs on a single to make it 5-0 after three and a half. Patterson pitched his last inning in the bottom of fourth, retiring the side in order to finish his day.

In the fifth, the first three batters reached on a single, error, and walk. Jordan DiPinto walked with the bases loaded to make it 6-0. Liberty then drove in a run on an error. 7-0 Tigers.

Jake Fredrick and Austin Campbell held Marple scoreless for the last two innings of the game.

Marple Newtown moves up to 5-3 in the Central league and will face Episcopal Academy (7-5) for out of conference play on Wednesday away at 3:45.

Upper Darby remains winless in the Central League (0-8) and will be away at Strath Haven (5-3 in CL) at 3:45 on April 22.
